What's the difference between MTP and MPO?

2020-10-17

The MTP connector belongs to the MPO connector and is described as a high-performance MPO connector.

The MTP connector is a high-performance MPO connector with multiple innovative designs. Compared with the general MPO connector, the MTP optical fiber connector has been enhanced in both optical and mechanical properties. MTP connectors fully comply with all professional standards of MPO connectors, including EIA/TIA-604-5 FOCIS 5 and IEC-61754-7.

The MPO type connector is a mutually mateable MTP connector that meets the industry standard, which means that it is feasible to replace the MPO connector with an MTP connector to obtain better performance. The performance of most MPO connectors that follow the old design is quite limited and cannot provide the same high performance as MTP fiber optic connectors.

The reason why the MTP connector is described as a high-performance MPO connector:

The performance and usability of the specially designed MTP connector are improved compared with the MPO connector. This design feature of MTP is unique and protected by patents. The main features are as follows:

1. The outer frame cover of MTP optical fiber connector can be easily removed.

The MT ferrule design can ensure that performance is not lost during rework and regrind during production. The negative and positive can be flexibly changed even on site after assembly, and interference detection can be performed after the ferrule is assembled.

2. The floating ferrule of the MTP optical fiber connector can improve the transmission performance during mechanical docking. The two connectors can be allowed to maintain good physical contact with the mating ferrules under the influence of external force.

3. The elliptical guide pin (PIN) of the MTP optical fiber connector is made of stainless steel. The elliptical guide pin can improve the accuracy of the docking and reduce the wear of the guide hole, so that the MTP optical fiber connector can maintain high-performance transmission more durable.

4. There is a metal pin clamp in the MTP fiber connector to fix the push ring.

MTP and MPO patchcord FAQ:

Q: Is the MTP connector an MPO connector?

Answer: Yes. MTP connector is a high-performance MPO connector designed to improve mechanical and optical performance.

Q: What is MTP Elite?

Answer: Compared with standard MTP® fiber optic cable, MTP Elite version provides lower insertion loss. The maximum insertion loss of the paired pair is 0.35db, while the multimode fiber optic cable is 0.6db, and the single mode fiber optic cable has a maximum insertion loss of 0.35db to 0.75db.

Q: What is MTP Pro cable?

Answer: The MTP PRO jumper has been pre-terminated with the MTP PRO connector and has been polished at the factory to reduce loss. The MTP PRO connector adopts a novel design, simplicity and reliability, and can provide fast and effective polarity and pin reconfiguration in the field, while ensuring product integrity and performance.

Q: Should I use MTP or MPO cables in high-density cable systems?

Answer: Both MTP and MPO fiber optic cables can be used in high-density cable structures, but MTP cables are an enhanced version of MPO cables that can improve the optical and mechanical properties of data center cable structures. It gives you the flexibility to change or upgrade the network without having to hire professional engineers to make gender or polarity changes.
